Lighting for Beginners: Taking the Fear Out of Off-Camera Flash

Sunday, February 14, 2027

8:30 AM - 9:45 AM

Audubron Ballroom

Lighting does not have to be intimidating. This practical studio demonstration is designed for photographers who are ready to move beyond natural light but feel overwhelmed by strobes, modifiers, power settings, and all the technical terminology that comes with studio lighting.

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of working with off-camera lighting, including light placement, power, modifiers, direction and quality of light, and the relationship between camera settings and flash. Francisco will demonstrate how changing the position and characteristics of a light changes the photograph and will walk through common lighting mistakes and how to correct them.

Francisco will build lighting setups from the ground up using live dancers, explaining not only what he is doing, but why and how light behaves in simple terms. The emphasis will be on creating simple, repeatable setups that photographers can understand, troubleshoot, and recreate on their own. The goal is for attendees to leave understanding the fundamentals well enough to confidently set up a light, make intentional adjustments, diagnose problems, and begin experimenting on their own.
