Artistic

Controlled Chaos: Gels, Gowns & Movement to Creating Drama Beyond the Dancer

Monday, February 15, 2027

8:30 AM - 9:45 AM

Audubron Ballroom

Dance photography shouldn't just document movement—it should make you /feel/ it.

In this hands-on class, we’ll go beyond simply photographing beautiful poses and explore how creative lighting, color, movement, and storytelling can transform a dancer into a piece of art. We’ll work with dramatic gels, flowing gowns, fabrics, and movement to create images filled with energy, emotion, shape, and dimension.

You’ll learn how I approach lighting a dancer, how I use flowing materials to extend movement beyond the body, and how I build an image around a story rather than just a pose. We’ll explore when to freeze motion, when to let it flow, how to sculpt the dancer with light, and how color, smoke, gobos (Go Between Objects) and fabric can completely change the mood of an image.
This isn't about capturing the perfect dance move. It's about learning to see the dancer, the light, the fabric, and the movement as individual elements—and then bringing them together to create something unforgettable. This class is about developing the ability to create rather than simply capture.

Come ready to experiment, create, and push beyond the expected. We're not just photographing dance—we're creating art with it.
